Our above-ground pool closing service is designed to properly prepare your pool and equipment for the winter season. Every pool is different, so we adjust our closing process based on the pool, equipment, cover and surrounding setup.
At Richard Pools, we specialize exclusively in above-ground pools. Our closing service includes the winter chemicals needed to prepare your pool for the off-season. Before we begin, we inspect the pool and equipment and make sure we have what is needed to complete the closing properly. We keep commonly needed closing supplies on hand, including winter skimmer plates, cover wire and cover cranks, so we can often take care of missing or damaged items during the closing instead of leaving the homeowner to find them.
Our Above Ground Pool Closing Process
Every above-ground pool is a little different. With more than 20 years of experience, we adjust our closing process to the pool, equipment and winter cover so the job is completed properly and as conveniently as possible for the homeowner
Preparing the Pool

Remove the pool ladder and other removable pool equipment.

Add the appropriate winter chemicals.

As a courtesy, remove minor debris from the pool as needed before closing. The pool should be properly cleaned and maintained by the homeowner before our arrival.

Block the skimmer and return using proper winterizing plates.
Winterizing Your Filter System
Above-ground pools use three main types of filter systems: cartridge, DE and sand filters. We have experience winterizing all three types and adjust the closing process based on the equipment installed on your pool. We also winterize pool heaters by removing the water from the system and disconnecting salt systems when applicable.
Cartridge Filters
For cartridge filter systems, we clean the filter cartridge, pump basket and filter unit as part of the closing process. The filter is drained and prepared for winter, then placed in the homeowner's preferred storage location. Once cleaned and drained, the cartridge filter system is lightweight and easy to store.
DE Filters
For DE filter systems, we drain and thoroughly clean the filter fingers to remove the DE and debris from the system. We then reinstall the filter so it is ready for the next pool season. Once drained and cleaned, the DE filter is lightweight and can be placed in the homeowner's preferred storage location.
Sand Filters
Sand filter systems are handled differently because the filter is heavy and is designed to remain in place. Moving a sand filter can potentially damage the unit. We backwash the filter to clean the sand, then properly drain the filter to help prevent freeze damage during the winter. The sand filter remains in its original location and is shrink-wrapped for winter protection.
Pump, Heater & Salt System Winterization
Pump Winterization
The pump is cleaned, disconnected and prepared for winter storage. The pump can be stored indoors in the homeowner's preferred location.
Heater Winterization
We winterize electric, gas and propane pool heaters by shutting off the appropriate power or gas supply and blowing water out of the heater and connecting lines to help prevent freeze damage. The heater intake and return lines are closed and protected to help prevent animals from getting into the equipment during the winter.
Salt Systems
For pools equipped with a salt system, we disconnect the salt cell from the plumbing and store it with the filter equipment in the homeowner's preferred storage location.
Winter Pillow & Cover Installation
Once the pool and equipment have been properly winterized, we install the winter pillow in the center of the pool and install the winter cover. Some covers are simple to install, while others can be more challenging depending on the pool, deck, equipment and surrounding setup. With more than 20 years of experience closing above-ground pools, we have the experience to handle different pool and cover configurations.
For your convenience, Richard Pools can also provide or pick up a winter cover and winter pillow when the homeowner agrees to the price in advance. We try to have the supplies needed to complete the closing available so the homeowner doesn't have to make another trip to find missing or damaged closing equipment.
Difficult Above Ground Pool Closings
Not every above-ground pool closing is straightforward. Pools with surrounding decks, difficult access, heavy or unusual ladders, heaters, additional equipment and challenging winter covers can require extra time and experience.
